Did you know the Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program is modeled off the national model in Philadelphia, Campus Philly? Last month, our friends at Campus Philly published a great blog post called Summer in Philly: Campus Philly Staff Picks. Our team at Action Greensboro enjoyed reading the post and wanted to provide a Greensboro version! In this post, we share our favorite summer activities in Greensboro, NC. *The Downtown Greenway is an initiative of Action Greensboro.

My idea of a perfect Sunday is to take the dogs for a walk in GreenHill Cemetery and head downtown along the open sections of the Downtown Greenway for brunch at Four Flocks & Larder. On the way home, pop by elsewhere, Hudson’s Hill, the Forge, and GPS. End the day with a picnic at Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park.

My kids and I like to go to Yum Yum hotdogs on Spring Garden Street to eat a famous hot dog and bottled Coke or Cheerwine. We get our ice cream to-go and head down to Morehead Park on the Downtown Greenway and eat our ice cream while walking on the ¼ mile stretch of the Downtown Greenway from Spring Garden to Gate City Blvd. If we are lucky, we will meet a train as we go under the Over.Under.Pass. and watch the lights in the trestle move to the vibration of the train going overhead.

After growing up in the sweltering swampland of north Florida, summer is my favorite season in Greensboro. The best weekends are filled with neighborhood walks to admire flowering hydrangeas, kayaking at Lake Brandt, outdoor movie nights with cold beers under the Echelman sculpture in LeBauer Park, purchasing fresh okra, tomatoes, peaches and basil at the Greensboro Farmer’s Curb Market for a locally made outdoor dinner with friends. *Check out Cecelia’s delicious recipes on her blog here.

Summer mornings are the best when I have Biscuitville for breakfast! Growing up in a small town, summers were always spent in the great outdoors. I love visiting the gardens of Greensboro; they are so peaceful and relaxing. After work, you can find me taking the free fitness classes in Greensboro Downtown Parks and on the Downtown Greenway, which are a plus for community members! Check out the Downtown Greenway fitness schedule here and the full calendar for Greensboro Downtown Parks here.

When it comes to a nice Summer day in Greensboro, I love hanging out at one of the great patios in Greensboro. My favorites include Café Europa at the Cultural Arts Center Downtown or Fishbones on the corner of Walker & Elam. There’s also a vibrant art scene in Greensboro, and I enjoy attending the free Levitt Amp music series with a picnic, strolling through the Weatherspoon Art Museum’s internationally renowned modern art collection or taking an art class at Shelf Life Art & Supply Co. or the Art Alliance.
Beth Mannella, Program Director, Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program
I moved to downtown Greensboro in June 2016, so I spent last summer learning my way around and exploring with the inaugural Fellows cohort. For my second summer in GSO, I am excited to go to City Market (local vendors and a great way to get out during the weeknight with friends), enjoy lunch in LeBauer Park (eating n0ma & Ghassan’s), attend Ethnosh dinners once/month, and continue volunteering at Carolina Theatre and the Community Theatre of Greensboro. Last but not least, I am going to search for the best bagel sandwich in Greensboro (I am from the north, so it will be hard to beat). If you have recommendations, let me know!
