When you were a college student, did you have any mentors from your university, college internship/job, or community? Can you imagine having a local newspaper publisher, city councilperson, downtown developer, or Chamber of Commerce President Mentor you while trying to navigate your college years and early career path? Well, the 53 Fellows in the Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program cohort each have a local community Mentor for this summer! Mentors include Andy Zimmerman, Brent Christensen, and Nancy Hoffmann, among 50 other community members who want to give back to local college students and the greater Greensboro community by mentoring the Fellows. The goal of the dinner is to kick off the 10-week Mentor Program as part of the comprehensive talent retention program initiated by Opportunity Greensboro.
On Monday, June 5, 2017 from 6 pm – 8 pm, the O.Henry Hotel will welcome attendees to the Fellows Program Mentor Dinner. This event is possible thanks to our event sponsors, Quaintance-Weaver Restaurants and Hotels and The Brooks Group. Mentors agree to meet with their respective mentee, one of the 53 Fellows, throughout the course of the 10-week Fellows Program. The Mentor Program is an asset to the Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program, as the Mentors serve as another network for each of the Fellows within the cohort during the summer and beyond.
Opportunity Greensboro is an initiative of Action Greensboro – with an interest in better preparing college students with talent and leadership development opportunities, Opportunity Greensboro launched the Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program in 2016. The Fellows Program is a 10-week summer program where local college students gain industry experience through paid internships, network with key business leaders and community members, participate in world-class leadership training during the two-day Leonard Kaplan Leadership Institute at the Center for Creative Leadership, and explore the city of Greensboro as young professionals. Funding for the Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program is provided by member organizations, local foundations, corporate partners, and event sponsors. Special thanks to the Leonard Kaplan Leadership Institute for its commitment to providing world-class leadership training, through the Center for Creative Leadership, to Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program participants.
