You will submit a resume as part of each internship application you complete. We strongly encourage you to visit your college/university’s career services office for assistance with your resume and other application materials. Below are a few high-level tips to get you started:
- Format: Your resume should ideally be one page and should be consistent in font, spacing, etc. Do not include photos, graphics, or colors on your resume. It should be simple and easy to read.
- Relevant Experience: Your resume should include your experiences and skills that are relevant to the internship to which you are applying. Employers scan your resume for 6 seconds on average. Help them find the information they are looking for by tailoring your resume to the position.
- Proofread: Misspellings and grammatical errors in your resume can land you in the rejection pile. Typos and errors may imply that you didn’t check your work and/or are not taking the application process seriously. Be sure to proofread and ask someone else to proofread!
Many of the internships you apply for will ask for a cover letter. We strongly encourage you to visit your college/university’s career services office for assistance with your cover letter and other application materials. Below are a few high-level tips to get you started:
- Tailor: Your cover letter should be specific to the organization. It should be addressed to the organization, and should include your skills and experiences that are relevant to the job description. Tell them why you are interested in their internship and what value you can add to their organization. Generic cover letters do not make you stand out!
- Proofread: Misspellings and grammatical errors in your cover letter (and resume) can land you in the rejection pile. Your cover letter is your opportunity to showcase your writing and communication skills. Typos and errors may imply that you didn’t check your work and/or are not taking the application process seriously. Be sure to proofread and ask someone else to proofread to eliminate errors!
Depending on the internship, you may be asked to submit other application materials such as a writing sample, reference list, or a creative sample (graphics, photos, videos, etc.). Be sure to read through the request carefully so that you are submitting the correct information/file. Failure to submit the requested materials correctly may result in your application being disqualified.
